What is 128-bit SSL encryption?

128-bit Secure Socket Layer (SSL) encryption is the highest level of encryption currently supported by commercial web browsers. This is the same type of security used by many financial institutions. Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 and above for Windows 98, Windows 98 SE, Windows NT 4.0, and Windows XP already include 128-bit encryption. If you have Windows 2000, you need to download the Windows 2000 High Encryption Pack to get 128-bit encryption. To find out which version of Internet Explorer you have and whether you have 128-bit encryption, go to the Help menu of your browser, choose ‘About Internet Explorer,’ and see what is listed under ‘Version’ and ‘Cipher Strength.’
